Hi neighbors,
Like a lot of you I’ve been looking for ways to help our neighbors in Boyle Heights and East LA and the other sections of town that have been most affected by the Lineage cold-storage fire in Boyle Heights.
Via social media, Eagle Rock Pop has been able to mobilize some terrific volunteers and donors and has coordinated with two eastside grassroots organizations to get both new and DIY air purifiers (Corsi-Rosenthal boxes) into the homes of those that need them most.
The news has been depressing, and we’ve had some really horrible air here in Eagle Rock as well, but meeting the people who’ve volunteered to donate and make deliveries has been really affirming.
On a more critical note, we here in Eagle Rock share quite a few elected officials with the areas most affected by the fire: US Rep. Jimmy Gomez, County Supervisor Hilda Solis, Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado, State Senator MarÍa Elena Durazo, not to mention Mayor Karen Bass. Their actions, and in some cases inaction, during this crisis give us a new lens as to how prepared our state and local government may be to respond to a major disaster.
Additionally, the response of Rep. Gomez and Mayor Bass in particular could have political consequences given that both are in runoff elections for their current offices. More on this in future issues.
All of which is to say, the Events issue is going out later than planned, but here it is. Please note that several events around town have been either cancelled or postponed due to the fire, so please double-check with the venues/organizers before heading out.
Take our poll at end of the newsletter letting us know your favorite Eagle Rock activity or hobby.
