Hello neighbors,

I hope you’re all finding ways to keep cool. And speaking of cool, there is no shortage of cool events in Eagle Rock this summer. This issue is mostly EVENTS with a few news tidbits. 

I am working on the first of our Bus Rapid Transit stories. I have been in touch with Councilmember Ysabel Jurado’s office and Metro and have submitted many questions regarding the construction timeline, the planned traffic detour routes, plans for commuter and pedestrian safety, and much more. Metro has promised me answers next week.

Look for a “what is this project exactly and how will it affect me?” story soon. Also, take the poll at the end of this newsletter to let me know how much you know about the Bus Rapid Transit project.

Eagle Rock Pop: News

A suspected grenade was found in an Eagle Rock backyard. Law enforcement responded quickly, residents were temporarily evacuated, no one was harmed, and the bomb squad dispatched with the suspected explosive. I mean, talk about never a dull moment. Click here to see KABC’s coverage.

The Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council/CD 14 Food Distribution is every Tuesday at Eagle Rock City Hall from 2:30-3:30 p.m. 

The ERNC Summer Clothes Drive continues with a call for NEW clothing items for men and women who are residents of Eagle Rock Tiny Homes. Most needed are new socks, underwear, shorts, and t-shirts. Items can be dropped off at Eagle Rock City Hall, Mon.-Fri., 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Repair Fair The first Repair Fair in May was such a success the ERNC is having another on Sunday Sep. 13. There is a call for volunteers who can fix, sew, and tinker. See this flyer for more info. 

Assemblymember Jessica Caloza announced that the Los Angeles-Glendale S.A.F.E. Center is reopening on Saturday July 25. LA City and LA County residents can drop off household hazardous waste such as solvents, electronics, and auto parts free for proper disposal. A state-issued photo ID is required to enter the plant. Los Angeles-Glendale S.A.F.E. Center, 4600 Colorado Blvd., Los Angeles, 90039. Saturdays only, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Saturday July 25:

Open Mic Poetry Share original poems, lyrics, spoken word, or just come to listen. Each poet will have five minutes to read an original work. Sign up on arrival. Eagle Rock Library, 5027 Caspar Ave. 1:00-2:30 p.m. 

Linocut Workshop Design, carve and print your own relief block and take home several original art prints. Supplies included. No experience required. Sliding price $25-35. For ages 16+. The Pop Hop Book Co-op, 5002 York Blvd. 6:30-8:30 p.m. 

Three Kings (1999) Editor’s note: Forgive me this humble brag. In early 2000, fate found me at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Party. I got a few minutes alone with Sir Elton and we bonded over our love of David O. Russell’s Three Kings which John declared to be “brilliant and quite overlooked.” Overlook this one no more! Sunday July 26:

Freaky Friday (2003) Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan play the mother daughter duo in this delightful body swap comedy. Vidiots, 12:30 p.m.

Eagle Rock Summer Concerts in the Park Locked Out of Heaven, a Bruno Mars tribute performer, will bring things into the 21st century at this fun summer series. Bring a blanket or beach towel. Eagle Rock Recreation Center, 1100 Eagle Vista Drive. 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Twin Peaks: The Original Mystery - Episodes 1 + 2 Kyle MacLachlan, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Sherilynn Fenn head the terrific cast in David Lynch’s groundbreaking but short-lived series about strange goings-on in a rural Washington town. Vidiots. 7 p.m.

Monday July 27:

Dungeons and Dragons for Kids and Teens Game master Linden Kemper leads kids and teens (ages 6-17) in a new adventure of the tabletop fantasy role-playing game. Adults may attend only if accompanying a child. Meets on the last Monday of the month from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Eagle Rock Library, 5027 Caspar Ave.

Radical Sewing Club Learn basic hand and machine sewing, clothing repair, embroidery. All supplies included but participants are encouraged to bring their own sewing supplies if they have them as well as an item of clothing that needs repaired. No experience required. $10-$15 suggested donation. The Pop Hop Book Co-op, 5002 York Blvd. 6:00-9:00 p.m. 

Movie Den at Vidiots Got Teens? During summer break, Vidiots shows teen-centric afternoon screenings in its MUBI Microcinema on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays for a teen- (and parent-) friendly $2.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988). Daniel Day-Lewis, Juliette Binoche, and Lena Olin are the leads in director Philip Kaufman’s retelling of Milan Kundera’s romantic novel set against the Soviet invasion of the former Czechoslovakia. Vidiots, 7:30 p.m.

Eagle Rock Book Club The selection for July is All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me by Patrick Bingley. The library will have copies to check out as well as electronic access on Libby and Hoopla. Bring book suggestions for future meetings. Eagle Rock Library, 5027 Caspar Ave. 3:00-4:00 p.m.

Network (1976). Director Sidney Lumet’s satirical take on television news turned out to be a remarkably prescient preview at reality TV and what we now simply call “content.” The film earned Academy Awards for Peter Finch (posthumously), Faye Dunaway, writer Paddy Chayefsky, and Beatrice Straight, whose performance, just over five minutes long, remains the shortest ever to win an acting Oscar.
