Eagle Rockers Helping Neighbors in Boyle Heights and East LA
Thank you to Eagle Rock residents Loren and Steve for donating two new air purifiers last week to residents who live near the cold storage warehouse fire in Boyle Heights.
A big thank you also to Christina Rodriguez Dobbins who made multiple deliveries of commercial air purifiers and Corsi-Rosenthal boxes put together by community volunteers from the Regenerative Collective and Coyotl + Macehaulli volunteer hub in Monrovia to Boyle Heights and East LA.

Eagle Rock Chamber of Commerce President Michael Nogueira volunteered his large stake bed truck to pick up and deliver pallets of air purifiers to Boyle Heights City Hall for State Assemblymember Jessica Calozza.
Parking Meters Removed on Colorado Blvd. Last week the LADOT quietly removed five parking spots on the south side of Colorado Blvd between Shearin Ave and Glen Iris painting the formerly metered spots red (no parking any time) and yellow (commercial loading only). This is the stretch of Colorado in front of Chateau Lemongrass, Blairs, and the soon-to-open Skylight Books. A lone metered spot remains in front of Nu World Glass.

Sparkletts Building Now a Historical Monument
The LA City Council voted unanimously to endow Historical-Cultural Status on the gorgeous Moorish-revival Sparkletts building which lies on the Eagle Rock-Glassell Park border on Lincoln Ave just southeast of the York/Eagle Rock Blvd intersection. King and the history of the natural spring water plant in this Pasadena Weekly article. Congrats to the Eagle Rock Historical Society for their work on this project.
Knead Another Reason to Watch the World Cup? The good folks at Colorado Donuts are in the news for their World Cup themed donuts.
We’re gonna keep rooting for the hole team down there. Okay, I’ll see myself out.
Pinky’s Ready for Her Close Up. Her Creator? Not So Much
The artist behind our beloved Pinky has finally come forward, kind of. Using the pseudonym Flod, the artist shared his thoughts on the pink bird’s evolution from public art lark in 2014 to legit community mascot with writer-documentary filmmaker Ryan Steven Green for the Los Angeles Times. The story is behind the LAT paywall but the video should be watchable.
To me the real story is the trio of elementary school gonzo journalists who actually broke the story and agreed to keep the artist’s identity secret. (One of the pint-sized reporters is Green’s daughter.) How do I subscribe to the kids’ paper?

Friday July 3
Ann Eliza will be spinning an eclectic mix of “60s soul, French pop, 70s punk, post punk, and new wave.” Johnny’s Bar, 5006 York Blvd., 9 p.m. No cover.
Saturday July 4
4th of July Parade on Hill Drive. The micro-parade (tots on decorated bikes and such) starts on Hill Drive between Vincent and Townsend and ends at Eagle Rock Blvd. with popsicles and entertainment from Bob Baker Marionettes at the finish line. I, for one, hope to see some adorably decked out pups. Starts at 10 a.m.
Jaws (1975). The 1 p.m. show is already limited walk-ups only so, we’re gonna need a bigger theater? Nah, but get your tickets for the 4:30 p.m. show. Vidiots, 1 p.m. (limited walk-ups only) and 4:30 p.m.
Griffith Park 4th of July Glow in the Dark Hike. Evening hike to the helipad atop Griffith Park to watch fireworks, drones, and any other shooting or flying phenomena. Organized by Take a Hike Hiking Club. Based on photos of previous hikes posted on Instagram, it appears to be kid-friendly. BYO glow sticks. 4730 Crystal Springs Dr., 90027. Meetup at 7 p.m., hike begins at 8 p.m.
Sunday July 5
PCC Flea Market. Pasadena City College, 1570 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena. Free admission. $2 parking in Lot 5 on Bonnie between Colorado Blvd. and Del Mar.
Aladdin (1992). Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, and Robin Williams in a voice performance for the ages as Genie. Vidiots, 1 p.m.
Summer Concerts in the Park 2026 kicks off with hair band Past Action Heroes playing pop and rock hits from the 80s and 90s. Bring picnic blankets and beach towels. Eagle Rock Recreation Center, 6-8 p.m. Set up as early as 4 p.m.
Overboard (1987). Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Big hair, big sunglasses, big fun. Vidiots, 7 p.m.
Monday July 6
Top Gun (1986). Continue the patriotic vibes with Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Kelly McGillis. Vidiots, 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday July 7
Free Screenings: Foosball: U. of Virginia Charlottesville, VA 1976 (2013) and This meeting is being recorded (2022). At the National Museum of the Aftermath which is temporarily residing at Oxy Arts, 4757 York Blvd. 6 p.m. Free.
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). Director Peter Weir’s eerie mystery about a group of schoolgirls and a teacher who disappear during a beach picnic on Valentine’s Day, 1900. It’s one of those movies that sticks with you long after you see it. Vidiots, 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday July 8
Trainspotting (1996). 30th anniversary screening of director Danny Boyle’s frenetic look at a group of heroin users in the Edinburgh suburbs. Tremendous cast led by Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner, and Kelly Macdonald in her screen debut. Iggy Pop, Blur, and Lou Reed on one of the best soundtracks of the 90s. New 4K restoration. Vidiots, 7:30 p.m.
