Eagle Rock Pop: Crime Report

A few reports of crimes in Eagle Rock have popped up on social media and the Citizen app: 

Chain snatchings! There has been a string of outdoor jewelry thefts this summer in which a thief, sometimes two, grabs a gold chain right off a victim’s neck. The thefts have taken place on sidewalks with at least one incident reported in the lower level parking lot of the Eagle Rock Plaza.

A gold chain was snatched Thursday from a person near Maywood and Yosemite just before 5:00 p.m. Also on Friday, Nela_Native posted a disturbing video on Instagram of what looks like mall security footage of the theft that was reported in the parking lot of the Eagle Rock Plaza on July 28.

These jewelry thefts follow reports of a chain snatching on July 27 at Eagle Rock Blvd and El Paso, and another on Colorado Blvd near Caspar on July 13. 

The two suspects in the June 13 theft dropped some personal items when the victim, a food delivery driver, chased after them. The evidence was retrieved by the LAPD. 

A witness to the July 28 chain snatching reported seeing the suspects leave in a black Audi which seems to match the video footage above. The only description of the two suspects is that they are young men; there is no description of the driver. 

The incident in the video above appeared to be more physical than some of the reported thefts so it’s possible that this one could be bumped up to a robbery because it appears that some physical force was involved. 

Word to the wise: leave your chains and necklaces at home during errands, especially anything of sentimental value.

One’s Liquor on Colorado Blvd and Mt. Royal was robbed on July 28. No one was reported to be injured, thankfully. 

A man was arrested at Vons on July 23 after threatening shoppers and store staff with a knife. The LAPD did not respond to an inquiry about this matter.

Full Moon There have also been a few reports of a nude man on Colorado Blvd in the last week or so. It has been awfully hot. Seriously though, a man was reportedly detained or arrested yesterday (July 30). We’re checking in with LAPD on this one too.

Awaiting word back from the LAPD regarding the jewelry thefts, liquor store robbery, knife wielder at Vons, and a nude man.

Chicken Little Shop of Horrors Occidental Children’s Theater presents another of its fun story  mashups. Occidental College, Remsen Bird Hillside Theater, 1600 Campus Road. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 10 a.m. Will call opens at 9:30 a.m. Runs through August 22. 

Mahjong for Migrants Players of all levels are welcome, including those who have never played. This event is a fundraiser for “Kuya” Jonathan, a local man who is currently being held in detention at Adelanto. (Kuya is a Tagalog honorific for older brother and is also used for other older male relatives such as cousins). RSVP here for details. Cafe 86, 6:00-10:00 p.m.

Psycho (1960) See Alfred Hitchcock’s touchstone thriller on the big screen. With Anthony Hopkins, Vera Miles, and, in that classic shower scene, Janet Leigh. Vidiots, 7:00 p.m.

Bring your household hazardous waste LA County residents can drop off hazardous items that should not go in the regular black bins including solvents, electronics, and auto parts free for proper disposal. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989) An absent-minded inventor (Rick Moranis) accidentally shrinks his kids and their neighborhood pals. Great family movie. Vidiots, 12:15 p.m.

I’ll Have What Cheese Having A “certified cheese pro” will guide the group through four cheeses, four pairings, flavor mapping, journal prompts, and more. Ages 21+ only. Women’s Twentieth Century Club, 5105 Hermosa Ave. Tickets start at $39.19. 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Vegan Sushi Workshop Dr. Acooba Scott will demonstrate how to make easy and affordable sushi. Includes tasting of assorted vegan sushi. Eagle Rock Library, 3 p.m.

Drone Show Councilmember Ysabel Jurado’s office is sponsoring the annual event which this year celebrates both the USA’s semiquincentennial and Back to School. There will be a backpack and school supply giveaway, live entertainment, and community resource booths. Bring a picnic, lawn chairs, and blankets. Eagle Rock Recreation Center, 1100 Eagle Vista Drive, 6:00-9:00 p.m. Free. 

Sunday August 2
Acoustic Sundaze Support the local coffee shop and listen to live music from singer-songwriter Aren Emirsian. Kavat Coffee, 1638 Colorado Blvd. Noon.

Eagle Rock Summer Concerts in the Park Get into the groove with Soul Sacrifice: A Tribute to Santana. Bring a blanket or beach towel. Eagle Rock Recreation Center, 1100 Eagle Vista Drive. 6:00-8:00 p.m.

One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) The original Disney animated adventure that pits a villainous fashion diva against a “bark network” of delightful British doggies eager to rescue the dotted dognapped pups. Vidiots, 1:00 p.m.

Persepolis (2007) The late comic book artist and author Marjane Satrapi co-directed this autobiographical animated film, a coming-of-age tale set before, during, and after the Iranian Revolution. Praised for its distinct animation and deft balance of political upheaval and tragedy with warmth and hope. Vidiots, 4:00 p.m.
